The first elected President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, had always been engaged in helping people in distress, an absolute synchronization with the views of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. He had been president of the committee, framed to develop the Constitution of India and considered education to be a main force in the development of a nation.

The eminent scholar of Sanskrit and Philosophy, Surendranath Dasgupta had been the President of the Indian Philosophical Congress. In academics he was the principal of Sanskrit College and a professor at Calcutta University. His contribution to education needs no mention and he was pronounced amongst his contemporaries.

The prolific writer Nirad C. Chaudhuri had topped the University of Calcutta merit list standing First Class First. Being highly influenced by the English Neoclassical poet, Alexander Pope, he had written many productive books, out of which The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian had short listed him among the best in the world.

As Birendranath Sasmal was immensly inspired by Surendranath Banerjea’s idilolism, he had sought to be transferred to the College (Ripon College). He had earned his degree from England and had joined Calcutta High Court in 1904. His patriotism, social welfare, devotion of country earned him the title ‘Deshpran’.

Renowned Bengali author was born in Darbhanga, Bihar. His early days were spent in Bihar. His college life was spent in Patna and Calcutta (Ripon College). He was a school teacher and Manager of Daily English News paper, named “Indian Nation” published from Patna. He awarded by Ananda Puraskar in 1958, Rabindra Puraskar in 1972 and Sharatchandra Puraskar in1978. Jagattarini Puraskar from Calcutta University, D.Litt from the Burdwan University and Desikottama from the Visva-Bharati University.

A popular writer in Bengali, grew up in Howrah district of West Bengal. He was a clerk to the last British barrister of the Calcutta High Court, Noel Frederick Barwell. The best known book is Chowringhee on a rainy day at the waterlogged crossing of Central Avenue and Dalhousie – a busy business district in the heart of Kolkata. The novel, set in the opulent hotel he called Shahjahan, was made into a cult movie in 1968. He marketed his literary work to Bengali households with the marketing slogan “A bagful of Shankar (Ek Bag Shankar)”.
