The first elected President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, had always been engaged in helping people in distress, an absolute synchronization with the views of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. He had been president of the committee, framed to develop the Constitution of India and considered education to be a main force in the development of a nation.

The eminent scholar of Sanskrit and Philosophy, Surendranath Dasgupta had been the President of the Indian Philosophical Congress. In academics he was the principal of Sanskrit College and a professor at Calcutta University. His contribution to education needs no mention and he was pronounced amongst his contemporaries.

The prolific writer Nirad C. Chaudhuri had topped the University of Calcutta merit list standing First Class First. Being highly influenced by the English Neoclassical poet, Alexander Pope, he had written many productive books, out of which The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian had short listed him among the best in the world.

As Birendranath Sasmal was immensly inspired by Surendranath Banerjea’s idilolism, he had sought to be transferred to the College (Ripon College). He had earned his degree from England and had joined Calcutta High Court in 1904. His patriotism, social welfare, devotion of country earned him the title ‘Deshpran’.

Renowned Bengali author was born in Darbhanga, Bihar. His early days were spent in Bihar. His college life was spent in Patna and Calcutta (Ripon College). He was a school teacher and Manager of Daily English News paper, named “Indian Nation” published from Patna. He awarded by Ananda Puraskar in 1958, Rabindra Puraskar in 1972 and Sharatchandra Puraskar in1978. Jagattarini Puraskar from Calcutta University, D.Litt from the Burdwan University and Desikottama from the Visva-Bharati University.

A popular writer in Bengali, grew up in Howrah district of West Bengal. He was a clerk to the last British barrister of the Calcutta High Court, Noel Frederick Barwell. The best known book is Chowringhee on a rainy day at the waterlogged crossing of Central Avenue and Dalhousie – a busy business district in the heart of Kolkata. The novel, set in the opulent hotel he called Shahjahan, was made into a cult movie in 1968. He marketed his literary work to Bengali households with the marketing slogan “A bagful of Shankar (Ek Bag Shankar)”.

He was born on 1st Jan1914 in Barisal district of undivided Bengal & graduated from Ripon college. A Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and the first Indian Fellow of the International Union of Soil Science, he remained associated during his illustrious career with the Asiatic Society, Bose Institute, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Indian Chemical Society, Indian Science Congress Association, ISI, Indian Society of Soil Science, West Bengal Academy of Science & Technology (as its Founder President). Renowned Indian sculptor received civilian awards from the Indian and French Govt. and won an Olympic silver medal on behalf of Great Britain. He taught at the University of Calcutta and the Delhi Polytechnic and then, in 1946, moved to London where he became a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.He returned to West Bengal in 1956 and was then elected as Principal of the Govt. College of Art & Craft. In 1974 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India. He served CU as lecturer, secretary, council of Post-Graduate Teaching in Arts, Inspector of Colleges, and professor of English from head of English department. He was elected to “Bengal Legislative Assembly.He was vice-president of the Constituent Assembly of India. Following the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly, Dr. Mookerjee was appointed Governor of West Bengal from 1 November 1951 through 4 August 1956. While working as Bengal governor, he served as the president of “Desh Bandhu Memorial Society” from 1953.

Dhurjati Prasad Mukhopadhyay, a Notable Bengali novelist. A Bengali author and one of the leading writers of modern Bengali literature. His best known work is the autobiographical novel, Pather Panchali. The 1951 Rabindra Puraskar, the most prestigious literary award in West Bengal, was posthumously awarded to Bibhutibhushan for his novel, Ichhamati. The writer completed his undergraduate degree with Economics, History and Sanskrit at the Surendranath College (then Ripon College), Kolkata. His first job was as a teacher. An Indian International Footballer and one of the best defenders India has ever produced. He has represented and captained India in different international competitions, Olympics and Asian Games. He is the only Asian Footballer ever to be named among the 10 best Captains in the world by the English FA in 1953. He graduated from Surendranath College. He worked for the G.S.I. Awarded the Padma Shri in 1971 by the Govt. of India, Awarded “Footballer of the Millennium” by AIFF in 2000, Awarded “Mohun Bagan Ratna” in 2001.
