About

Department of computer Science was incepted long back in 1994. Surendranath College was the first college to flag the honor of introducing this course, in undergraduate level in University of Calcutta. Therefore the department bears a historical importance in this aspect.

The teaching learning process of Computer Science Pass/General course was started in 1994, and the honors course in the subject was started in 1996, under the supervision of Physics department. The then principal Dr. Shishutosh Samanta cooperated to lay out the foundation stone of the department and nurture to grow from its soil level till his retirement in Jan’ 2001. The approved student strength was 30 in Honors/Advanced and 20 in pass/general course. The department eventually grew to its independent status in 2001, by the sincere effort of Dr. Samanta. The department ran smoothly from 2001 under the foresightedness of the then Principal Prof. Chinmay Sarkar. Current Principal Dr. Indranil Kar encourages the teachers and staffs whole heartedly in every aspect of departmental upliftment. Under his sincere guidance, the department in 2017 was able to inaugurate PG course (MSc in Computer Science). The then HoD Dr. Himadri Bhattacharyya gave him proper assistance in developing the post graduate infrastructure. This department is the only post-graduate department of the college. The college stood second in position among all the colleges in West Bengal to initiate PG course in Computer Science.

The department has a glorious past in its student’s record in university examination year by year. Most of the appeared students obtained first class in their University results and some of them ranked between 1 to 10. The level of excellence in course of result is being kept up till date.

Presently, Ms. Susmita Bhowmick has been serving her duty as the HoD in Computer Science, Surendranath College, University of Calcutta. There are three Assistant Prof, thirteen State Aided College Teacher and five skilled non teaching staffs in the current scenario.
